This is a year-long, two-semester course that builds on your LEGO Spike Essentials Kit experience. You’ll combine hands-on circuit building with block coding to create and control your own basic bots, sharpening creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking along the way.
Semester 1:
Students review prior lessons and dive deeper into the Spike Essentials Kit. You’ll build and wire simple circuits—power rails, switches, LEDs—and attach motors and sensors to make basic robots. Weekly challenges guide you step-by-step as you practice connecting components and testing your designs.
Semester 2:
You’ll learn to program icon- and block-based routines in Spike’s software to drive your creations. From line-following bots to light-and-sound displays, each project pushes you to plan, code, debug and improve. In this final course as an Early Robotic Engineer, you’ll complete a capstone project that showcases your engineering and coding skills.
Jr Robotics Level 1: Robotics and Electronics
Ages: 8+
Duration: 1 Year (2 Semesters)
Location: Lehi
Prerequisite: None (This is an entry level course.)
Over two semesters, students will explore the fundamentals of robotics, programming, and electronics using the VEX IQ robot, VEX Code VR, and introductory Arduino. They’ll learn to design circuits, control lights and sound, drive motors, read sensors, and combine hardware and software into working gadgets. Hands-on projects each term reinforce concepts and build toward a creative capstone of the student’s own design.
Semester 1:
Master the VEX IQ robot and VEX Code VR to program flashing LEDs, simple melodies, motor motion, basic wiring, and sensor-triggered behaviors.
Semester 2:
Learn Arduino breadboarding and text-based coding, build circuits with LEDs, buzzers, and buttons, and integrate Arduino with VEX IQ for a personalized capstone gadget.
Jr Robotics Level 2: Advanced Engineering & Electronics
Ages: 8+
Duration: 1 Year (2 Semesters)
Location: Lehi
Prerequisite: Jr Robotics Level 1
Semester 1:
In the first semester, students build on their VEX IQ skills by using sensors—distance, color, touch and gyro—to trigger actions and writing code with variables, loops and functions in VEX Code VR. They design gear trains and custom attachments for precise movement. By the end, each student creates a “Reaction Bot” that navigates a simple maze using sensor feedback, then shares a working demo and a short design summary with the class.
Semester 2:
In the second semester, students wire and program handheld joysticks and radio-transceiver modules to control their robots remotely. They add Arduino circuits on a breadboard and write text-based sketches to read specialty sensors. They explore RF modules for basic multi-robot coordination and practice systematic debugging, signal-integrity checks and power management. Finally, each student plans, builds and presents a personalized capstone gadget that blends lights, sound, motion and advanced electronics.
Jr Robotics Level 3: Capstone & VEX IQ Team
Ages: 8+
Duration: 1 Year (2 Semesters)
Location: Lehi
Prerequisite: Jr Robotics Level 2
In this course, junior Arduino experts and the VEX IQ Robotics team work together for hands-on training that sharpens their robotics skills. Capstone Students: With just enough guidance, students pick a real engineering problem—like a weather app that won’t update or a door that needs extra security—and then design, build, and code their own solution. VEX IQ Robotics Team will focus on the VEX Game Objective/Problem/Solution.
For example: Problem: The weather app isn’t working. Solution: Create a custom weather tower with sensors and display. Problem: You’re worried about safety. Solution: Build a door alarm that sounds when someone opens it.
By tackling these challenges, students gain real-world engineering practice and team experience at the same time.
ROBOTICS Level 1: Robotics Engineering and Programing
Ages: 12+
Duration: 1 Year (2 Semesters)
Location: Lehi
Prerequisite: None (This is an entry level course.)
Over two semesters, students build a strong foundation in robotics by building and programming the VEX EXP robot with Python, designing and wiring Arduino input/output circuits, and mastering debugging and hardware integration. Students will expand their skills by adding C++/C# coding to create more advanced control programs. They will learn about Arduino sensors and VEX EXP mechanics.
Semester 1:
Students begin by mastering the VEX EXP robot and learning Python and C++/C# to control its motors, sensors, and lights. They’ll write simple scripts to drive the robot through obstacle courses, read distance and color sensors, and sketch basic Arduino circuits for inputs like buttons and outputs like LEDs. Hands-on challenges each week build confidence in wiring, coding, and debugging.
Semester 2:
In the second semester, students add C++/C# coding to their skill set, creating more advanced control programs for the VEX EXP. They’ll integrate Arduino modules—like temperature or motion sensors—into their robot projects and write C++/C# code to process those signals. By the end, each student plans and builds a custom robot or gadget that blends VEX EXP mechanics, Python and C# software, and Arduino inputs and outputs into a polished final project.
ROBOTICS Level 2: Real-World Challenges & VEX EXP Competition Team Prep
Ages: 12+
Duration: 1 Year (2 Semesters)
Location: Lehi
Prerequisite: Robotics Level 1
Students build on their core robotics and electronics skills by choosing one of two hands-on tracks: solving a real-world engineering challenge or preparing for the VEX EXP Competition. Working in small teams over six to eight weeks, they’ll identify a need—such as monitoring air quality or automating a pet feeder—or analyze this year’s VEX EXP game rules, then plan, prototype and iterate their designs using Python and C++/C# code, Arduino sensors and VEX EXP mechanics. Students may enroll in this class as many times as they like for continuous learning and competition.
